A heat pump is an efficient system that uses the energy in the environment and transfers it to be used for heating or cooling purposes. Thermal energy naturally flows from places with higher temperature to locations with lower temperatures. For example, in the winter, heat from inside your home is lost to the outside. A heat pump uses electrical energy to counter the natural flow of heat. In heating mode, it pumps the energy available from a colder place to a warmer one, effectively using thermal energy in the air outside to heat your home indoors. In cooling mode, it works similar to your current air conditioner by removing the heat and humidity from inside your home and transferring that energy outside. Because heat pumps transfer thermal energy, rather than just convert gas or electricity to heat like a furnace, they offer a higher energy efficiency, potentially saving on energy costs and reducing your home's carbon footprint.
